We have received the following information regarding the installation of Remembrance poppy displays on Shropshire Council owned highway lamp columns.

Shropshire Council recognises the importance of Remembrance Day and the significant role that local communities play in commemorating those who have served in the Armed Forces.

Shropshire Council is pleased to advise that applications to install Remembrance poppy displays on Shropshire Council-owned highway lamp columns may be considered, subject to approval through the online application process and compliance with the relevant installation and safety requirements.

The application process enables Shropshire Council to review proposed locations and mounting arrangements, ensuring that displays do not adversely affect highway safety, visibility, street lighting equipment, or other highway assets. It also provides a consistent approach across the county and maintains an appropriate audit trail for all approved installations.

Applications should be submitted using the following online form:

Banners, bunting or Christmas lights on the highway | Shropshire Council

To support local Remembrance initiatives, applications for approved Remembrance poppy displays will be processed free of charge.

Given that Remembrance Day and associated national commemorative events are coordinated by the Royal British Legion (RBL), and recognising the RBL's role in supporting the Armed Forces community and raising funds for veterans and their families, the Council's position is that only official Royal British Legion (RBL) poppy displays should be installed on Shropshire Council-owned lamp columns. This helps ensure a consistent approach across the county, supports the recognised charitable cause, and maintains the integrity of the national Remembrance campaign.

Official poppy displays can be obtained directly from the Royal British Legion via:

Please note that this guidance applies only to lamp columns owned by Shropshire Council. Where lamp columns are owned by a Town or Parish Council or another organisation, permission should be obtained directly from the relevant asset owner.
